Newcastle United have confirmed that Paul Mitchell has stepped down as the club’s sporting director less than a year after taking the role.

Mitchell was appointed in July 2024 following a four-month search for Dan Ashworth’s successor.

The timing of Mitchell’s exit has sent shockwaves around the club. Newcastle are gearing up for a return to the Champions League despite losing their final game against Everton.

Mitchell was expected to oversee what should be a crucial summer transfer window for the Magpies, but his sudden exit leaves them with a decision to make at the top of their recruitment department.

Newcastle’s chief executive officer Darren Eales, who was behind Mitchell’s move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, is also set to step down due to health concerns.

Mitchell’s departure will not affect the club’s summer transfer plans. They already have a clear idea of which positions need strengthening and which players to target.

He will remain in an advisory role until the end of June. Meanwhile, Steve Nickson and Andy Howe will assume additional responsibilities during this transition.

“I’m leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales – someone who I have worked so closely with in my career – moving on soon.

“The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.”

Mitchell didn’t always see eye-to-eye with manager Eddie Howe, but they found a middle ground and developed a working relationship as the season progressed.

The experienced talent spotter believed he helped lay the groundwork for long-term success, and qualification for the Champions League has vindicated him.

Newcastle insists it’s business as usual, but Mitchell’s exit could dent their summer plans.
