Newcastle United are considering a move to sign Samu Aghehowa from FC Porto as the club look to land a centre-forward.
Eddie Howe has had a frustrating window in the transfer market with the Magpies failing to sign a series of targets.
Newcastle submitted a club-record bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko last week, but the Slovenian is now closing in on a move to Manchester United.
It follows failed pursuits of forwards including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, alongside a rejected bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
The Athletic are reporting that Aghehowa features ‘high on small shortlist’ of alternatives. The 21-year-old joined Porto from Atletico Madrid last summer and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, scoring 27 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions.
That haul included a brace against Manchester United in a Europa League draw at the The Estádio do Dragão.
Porto are likely to value the forward at upwards of £60m. He has a release clause of €100m (£86.7m) in his contract. Agehowa made his debut for Spain in 2024 and was part of the squad that reached the Nations League final in the summer.
The 6ft 4in forward came close to a transfer to Chelsea last summer but saw a deal collapse before moving to Porto. He is one of several options that Newcastle are considering, as leading scorer Alexander Isak pushes for an exit. Callum Wilson has also departed this summer.
Other names on the club’s shortlist include Wissa, Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
