Newcastle United are pushing ahead with efforts to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

According to Sky Sport journalist Keith Downie, the Magpies are preparing a new package worth closer to £35 million, which could bring the two clubs closer to an agreement.

Newcastle’s opening bid of around £25m was rejected by Brentford, who are reportedly reluctant to let Wissa leave the Gtech Community Stadium this summer.

The DR Congo striker was in fantastic form for the Bees last season, netting 19 Premier League goals as Thomas Frank’s side finished 10th in the standings.

Brentford have been picked apart this summer. Frank has joined Tottenham Hotspur as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, while top scorer Bryan Mbeumo moved to Manchester United.

Wissa wants to follow the duo out of the club and has made it clear to Brentford that he wants to take on a fresh challenge this summer.

A move to Newcastle will give him a chance to play in the Champions League, but Brentford are playing hardball.

After they turned down Newcastle’s first bid, the 28-year-old striker left the club’s pre-season training camp and is currently training alone in London while talks continue behind the scenes.

The clubs are close to an agreement. Wissa is expected to hold discussions with Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, this week as the situation develops.

The Congolese international has just one year left on his current contract, although Brentford hold an option to extend for another year.

But the Bees know they’re in a tough spot, especially with the player pushing for a move.

Newcastle’s renewed interest comes after they were dealt a massive blow with Alexander Isak effectively handing in a transfer request.

They have wasted no time scouring the market for a potential replacement. While talks for Wissa continue, the Magpies have also been linked with a move for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.
