Newcastle United have decided to end their transfer interest in Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi after seeing multiple bids rejected.

The Magpies have been on the hunt for a new centre-back throughout the summer window, with options for manager Eddie Howe low in that area due to severe injuries suffered by Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

Emil Krafth has been partnering Dan Burn in recent weeks, with Howe recently declaring the Magpies would not be forced into any uncomfortable positions in the final few days of the window.

Newcastle have now grown tired of negotiating with Palace, according to Sky Sports, having offered a club-record £65m plus £5m in add-ons. However, the Eagles have been keen to retain their club captain as they look to maintain their stunning end-of-season form from 2023/24 this time around.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed on Friday that talks over Guehi's departure were over, saying: "I can confirm Marc Guehi will stay. It was never really in doubt. Congrats to the club and the owner, they never gave in."

Palace have lost Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen in the last few months but they have brought in Chadi Riad, Daichi Kamada and Ismaila Sarr, while Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix is expected to join on deadline day in an £18m transfer.

Recent reports suggested Newcastle had identified Chelsea's Axel Disasi as one alternative target to Guehi, while there has also been communication with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen over a potential deal for Edmond Tapsoba.

Fabian Schar is also currently suspended, making matters worse on top of Botman and Lascelles' absences ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
