Marc Guehi was one of the most promising talents to emerge from Cobham. However, his departure from the club in 2021 to Crystal Palace left many feeling that Chelsea had let go of a defender with real potential too soon. Three years later, the situation has taken a turn. The English defender has established himself as one of the most solid centre-backs in the Premier League, while Chelsea, despite spending on defenders, have not found the perfect formula at the back. Their interest in Guehi is not surprising. In a market that rarely offers bargains, the Englishman’s contractual situation opens a window that the Londoners could take advantage of.

According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea intend to sign Marc Guehi for a reasonable fee, taking advantage of the fact that the defender is entering the final year of his contract. Crystal Palace know that they will not be able to demand a high fee under these conditions. The player, who currently earns £50,000 per week, is a key player at Selhurst Park, but the club also understand that this could be its last chance to receive a sum for his sale. In addition, Give Me Sport claims that the Blues are stepping up their offensive to secure the centre-back’s return this summer.

T4O Opinion:

The move would make sense for several reasons. First, from a sporting perspective. Chelsea showed obvious defensive flaws last season, and Enzo Maresca needs immediate solutions, not promises for the future. Guehi is 24 years old, in his physical prime, knows the club and can adapt without delay. As for the price, the player’s contractual situation is pushing Palace to negotiate. Big signings do not always require astronomical figures, and this case may be a timely exception. The investment would make sense both financially and from a sporting point of view.

However, beyond the cost, the key is the need. Chelsea must strengthen themselves to compete with guarantees in the Champions League. Defensive solidity was one of the pillars of previous successful campaigns, and Guehi could provide precisely that. In addition, there is an emotional element that may carry weight: the centre-back came up through the club and could see this return as unfinished business. If the Englishman is motivated and the club offer a clear plan, the gamble could pay off immediately. It would be a mistake to pass up this opportunity if it is truly within reach.
