Newcastle United have launched an ambitious £50 million move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, according to the Mirror.
However, the 26-year-old is understood to have an £80m release clause in his contract.
Newcastle are keen to bolster their defensive ranks and believe Tapsoba is an ideal option.
He has earned rave reviews in Germany since joining Leverkusen in 2019.
Tapsoba has made 226 appearances across all competitions and helped the team win an unbeaten domestic double in the 2023/24 season.
Leverkusen recently lost Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich, while Piero Hincapie has also been linked with an exit.
They would be reluctant to sanction Tapsoba’s exit, as he is a hugely important first-team member.
Newcastle have endured a frustrating summer transfer window and have yet to make a major signing.
Newcastle’s £50m bid for Joao Pedro was turned down, and he is now on the verge of joining Chelsea.
They have also had bids rejected for Anthony Elanga and James Trafford.
Their efforts to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth also came to nothing, as he signed for Real Madrid, while Bryan Mbeumo is close to joining Manchester United.
However, there is still plenty of time left in the transfer window, and they could make a quality signing soon.
