Matěj Kovář’s move to PSV awaits Manchester United’s approval

Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayer Leverkusen keeper Matěj Kovář’s move to PSV Eindhoven is being held up by a slight technicality. Kovář’s former club Manchester United retained matching rights on the deal that sent Kovář to Leverkusen in August 2023. PSV and the Bundesliga outfit are thus waiting on United’s go-ahead.

The matter shouldn’t prevent Kovář from joining the Dutch champions. As reported by Kicker yesterday, Kovář was in Eindhoven to complete his medical. A €5m sale with €2m in add-ons has been agreed upon by both clubs.

The English Red Devils have little reason not to waive their matching rights as they themselves pocketed €5m from Kovář’s sale to Leverkusen, also securing a re-sale clause as part of the deal.

Plettenberg insinuates that United will cooperate. If the German transfer expert is correct, the deal should be confirmed tomorrow.

The only potential stumbling block concerns the fact that Holland’s De Teelegraaf claims that Leverkusen are attempting to loan, not sell, Kovar.

If this report proves true, then United may wish to review their options in order to ensure they receive proper compensation under the re-sale clause.
