There is ‘a chance’ that Newcastle United can sign Watford winger Ismaila Sarr during the upcoming transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

Sarr has been heavily linked with a move away from Vicarage Road after suffering his second relegation from the Premier League in three years.

What is the latest news involving Sarr?

According to FootballTransfers, the Senegal international’s representatives met with some of Newcastle’s hierarchy last month to discuss a potential switch to the North East.

It’s claimed that Watford are set to demand £40 million for their prized asset, who still has just over two years remaining on his current contract.

And The Sun provided a recent update on Sarr’s situation, claiming the Magpies are planning to try their luck by offering an initial £20m for the 24-year-old’s services.

The report states that Premier League giants Liverpool have also sent scouts to watch the talented star, who Gary Neville previously labelled “special”, as the race for his signature begins to heat up.

It’s been a frustrating campaign for Sarr, though, who was unable to prevent the Hornets from dropping back down the Championship once again, but he’s showcased his true potential on many occasions throughout his time in England.

In 92 appearances for Watford, the 6 foot ace has registered 24 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, catching the eye of several impressed onlookers.

What has Downie said about Sarr?

Downie believes Newcastle may be able to sign Sarr in a ‘cut-price deal’ this summer and reckons he is ‘an Eddie Howe type of player’.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think there’s a chance that can happen. They would probably get him in a sort of cut-price deal with him being relegated; I can’t see him being in the Championship next season.

“And I would imagine he’s an Eddie Howe type of player in terms of the pace, the directness. I can see him working well at Newcastle.”

Do Newcastle need Sarr?

During Howe’s short reign, Newcastle have predominantly lined up with Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser on the wings either side of central striker Chris Wood.

However, according to the Daily Mail, the St. James’ Park outfit are prepared to part ways with fans’ favourite Saint-Maximin if they receive a bid in the region of £50m.

Sarr may be viewed as the ideal replacement for the inconsistent Frenchman, providing Howe with the sort of reliable goal threat his desires at Newcastle.
