Newcastle United could make a landmark appointment by hiring a new sporting director amid Amanda Staveley’s recent comments.

What’s the story?

Amid all the speculation surrounding Steve Bruce, Staveley addressed a question about whether the Magpies would look to appoint someone to a more executive role.

She said: “We have thought about sporting directors and Directors of Football but we need to sit down with our board and look at what we have today. You can bring in the best Sporting Director in the world but you’ve got no infrastructure.

“Your medical staff, your training facilities, they need really heavy investment and that’s what we need to know at every single level. We need to attract people to work with us as well who share our dream and will do that.”

Fans will be buzzing

The Chronicle has already suggested that renowned manager and sporting director, Ralf Rangnick, has been put forward as a potential option, and “would understood to be open to the challenge of an executive role at Newcastle.”

Rangnick of course has worked at the likes of RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg in a number of different roles, and has helped oversee the careers of the likes of Sadio Mane and Dayot Upamecano among others.

His eye for spotting young talent and developing them is well talked about, and with his previous links to Manchester United too, he could be the kind of high-profile acquisition behind the scenes that really sets the tone and culture at St James’ Park.

Big-money signings and splashing the cash on players is all very good and well, but someone like Rangnick or even just a shrewd, well thought out appointment in that sporting director role would streamline everything and get everyone on the same page in terms of recruitment and development.

The fact the new owners are open to such an idea and moving with the times is sure to have Newcastle fans buzzing. This would truly be a landmark appointment for the club, perhaps an even more important one than nailing down the next manager. Without an experienced recruiter behind a coach, they won’t be very well set up for success.
