Newcastle ‘close in’ on Diego Carlos as Sevilla ‘concede defeat’ following transfer request
The Football Faithful
Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Diego Carlos after the defender handed in a transfer request at Sevilla.
Eddie Howe’s side have already seen two bids for the centre-back rejected by Sevilla, but the defender’s decision to hand in a formal transfer request has seen the Spanish side ‘concede defeat’ in their battle to keep Carlos at the club.
The Guardian are reporting that advanced talks over a deal have now began as Newcastle look to finalise the signing of the Brazilian in time to make his debut against Leeds this weekend.

Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that personal terms have been agreed with the player, but the two teams are yet to reach an agreement with Newcastle’s latest offer of around €35m not enough to meet Sevilla’s demands.
Newcastle have made the signing of at least one new centre-back a priority during the January window, with the Magpies’ second-bottom of the Premier League after conceding 43 goals.
Norwich are the only side in the division to have conceded more this season and Howe will be hopeful his side can complete a deal for Carlos in the coming days.
The 28-year-old has spent two-and-a-half seasons with Sevilla and won the Europa League in 2020, whilst he also formed part of the Brazil squad that won Olympic gold in Tokyo last year.
Newcastle had seen a move for first-choice target Sven Botman fail to materialise earlier in the window, but are now close to making Carlos their third January signing after the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
