According to Portuguese outlet Leonino, the Gunners are working on a move to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The 26-year-old signed for Sporting Clube de Portugal last summer from the Sky Blues in a deal worth a reported €20 (£16.9) million.

The agreement between the two clubs also included a sell-on clause worth 15 per cent.

Gyokeres has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances in Portugal’s top flight, contributing 29 goals and 10 assists from 33 Liga Nos appearances (all stats from Fbref).

Coventry will be in line to receive 15 per cent of any transfer fee paid to Sporting for Gyokeres if a sale is agreed.

Arsenal are believed to be close to finding an agreement on the financial details of a move, as Mikel Arteta looks to make improvements to his attacking options for next season.

The Swede was key to Sporting winning the Portuguese title, reclaiming the championship after coming fourth in the prior campaign.

Ruben Amorim’s side also reached the Round of 16 in the Europa League, with Gyokeres bagging five goals in the continental competition.

It has been reported that the striker has a release clause worth €100 (£84.5) million, but it remains to be seen will Arsenal trigger that to seal a deal.

The two clubs could also negotiate a lower fee, if Sporting are open to a sale, with it being previously reported that they could even accept up to half that figure.

Coventry will be keeping a close eye on the situation, as the Championship side could receive up to roughly £12 million, depending on the size of a potential deal.

This would be a major fee for the Sky Blues to receive, and could be reinvested back into improving Mark Robins’ first team squad this summer.

Coventry’s summer plans

Coventry are set to lose key figure Callum O’Hare for nothing, with the midfielder’s contract expiring at the end of the month.

This will come as a blow to the club given his importance to the side, but a deal has already been confirmed to sign Jack Rudoni from Huddersfield Town.

It’s believed that the transfer cost £6 million, potentially rising to £10 million with add-ons.

Luis Binks has also joined Coventry this summer, with the club taking a proactive approach to the start of the transfer window.

Gyokeres windfall would be massive for Coventry

If they receive another eight-figure sum for a player they sold last summer then that would be great business for the club.

Gyokeres was an excellent player for the Championship side, but it was time for him to step up a level after Coventry failed to gain promotion, and he’s since proven himself even further in Portugal.

A big fee coming in for Gyokeres would be a great example of the success of sell-on clauses, and would further justify the Sky Blues’ business model.
