Gary Neville has described Liverpool’s win over Manchester City as ‘worse than a funeral’.

Jurgen Klopp’s league leaders extended their advantage at the top to eight points with victory over their title rivals on Sunday, goals from Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane securing a vital 3-1 win at Anfield.

The win was the latest impressive performance in the club’s strong start to the season, with hopes having now been further raised that Liverpool can finally bring an end their long wait for a league title.

Former Manchester United defender Neville admits it is ‘painful’ to watch the current performances from United’a arch-rivals, and has suggested he believes the title could finally be heading to Merseyside this season.

“It’s as painful as it gets. I have worn all black today with a black tie as well,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“It was a funeral match today, it was worse than a funeral. This is my funeral and you are witnessing it as we speak. I’m a Manchester United fan and for 20 years to get the title back and keep it away from Liverpool.

“This is one club that can compete with Manchester United in terms of globe fanbase, scale, tradition, history, and success.

“If they get a Premier League title under their belt they become a real power. It is painful as a United fan and we are where we are at this moment of time.”
