Denzel Dumfries feels that the secret to the trophies Inter Milan have won in recent years is the strength of the group and “family” atmosphere.
The Dutchman gave his thoughts in the official matchday programme for today’s Supercoppa Italiana clash with Atalanta.
This week, Inter have the chance to win their first piece of silverware of the 2024-25 season.
The Nerazzurri take on Atalanta this evening for a chance to play in the Supercoppa Italiana final.
Inter have won the Supercoppa in each of the past three seasons. They have also won the Coppa Italia twice, and last time around, the Serie A title.
That means that wingback Dumfries has won six trophies with Inter already. He also started in the Champions League final for the Nerazzurri in 2023.
Dumfries joined Inter in the summer of 2021. And he has already had quite the journey with the Nerazzurri.
“It’s important to always look in the mirror,” said the 28-year-old. “To understand where you can improve, and train hard.”
“Over my career, I’ve put in a lot of work to reach this level,” he went on.
“I remember in the beginning, playing against friends, hard-fought matches as we found new ways to play together.”
“And then there were big steps,” Dumfries continued. “Like my first goal at the Euros in 2021.”
The Netherlands international called that “an important goal because it was my first at a major tournament.”
“And then, the successes and trophies with this shirt.”
“From the first Supercoppa, to the Scudetto of the second star,” Dumfries recalled. “Which make me very proud.”
“All of this has been possible because we have a very united group,” the 28-year-old said. “With players who work together, and live like a family.”
Of winning the Serie A title last season, Dumfries said that “Reaching that milestone was very important for everyone.”
“We celebrated it in a big way,” added the former PSV wingback. “With the fans.”
“It was a great feeling to do so all together.”
