Romelu Lukaku’s been one of Napoli’s standout players this season – just not in the way most people expected.
Wearing the number 11 shirt, he is their top scorer, but more than that, he's turned into a bit of a provider – serving up assists like a proper waiter. It’s largely down to his direct goal involvements, that Napoli are still well in the mix for the Scudetto.
And with the season still going, Big Rom’s already equalled his personal best for assists. Back in 2020/21 at Inter Milan, he racked up 11 of them – the same number he hit on Monday after laying on two goals for Scott McTominay in their 3-0 win over Empoli.
He’s not banging in goals like he used to in his Inter days, where he smashed past the 30-goal mark in back-to-back seasons (2019/20 and 2020/21).
So far this campaign, he's netted 12 in 32 games – not terrible, but nothing to shout about either, with an average of 0.37 goals per game.
Right now, he’s actually the top assist provider in Serie A. Ten of his 11 assists have come in the league, putting him ahead of the likes of Nuno Tavares, Dimarco, Rafael Leão, and Pulisic – all sitting on eight.
Antonio Conte’s Napoli are still dreaming of that fourth Serie A title, with Inter their main threat. The Nerazzurri are top with 71 points, but Napoli are right on their heels – just three points behind.
