Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has hailed the team’s Scudetto glory as “the best moment of my career” and praises head coach Antonio Conte “but above all to the fans” who he described as “the 12th man, all season long.”

The former Manchester United took little time in settling in at Napoli, quickly becoming an integral part of the team that pipped Inter to the Scudetto.

After leaving Manchester for Naples last summer in a deal worth a reported £25.7 million, the Scotsman played 34 times in the league and scored a career-best 12 goals.

McTominay: ‘Conte made it easy to settle in’

In an interview with radio station Radio CRC, with quotes via TMW, from Napoli’s pre-season training camp in Dimaro, the midfielder was asked about how he settled in at the club and in Serie A, to which he responded that “settling into Serie A was made very easy by coach Conte and my teammates, who have been fantastic with me from the very first moment I arrived.”

He was then asked about the final game of the season, where Napoli defeated Cagliari to lift the Scudetto, and the feeling of domestic glory itself. McTominay replied “It was the best moment of my career. I couldn’t have dreamed of anything better.

“I did an interview four months ago and told the Neapolitans I wanted to bring them the league title, and through hard work – we did it. The target was very important, but now we have to focus on the new season and we have to do it again.

“Great teams and great players are always hungrier and I will do my best for this team. We have a lot of matches this year and a great group.”

McTominay hails Napoli fans as ’12th man, all season long’

McTominay was also asked about the club’s open-top bus title parade, which the Scotland international described as “amazing – I didn’t expect anything like that!”

“All the support was incredible, to be honest. Billy and I sat at home afterwards, took a breath, and just said ‘Wow!’ The credit for the Scudetto goes to the team, to the coach of course, but above all to the fans, they were the 12th man all season long. They were there in good times and bad. Even when we had tough moments, they helped us.

“It’s my first time in Dimaro, it has great facilities. Now it’s time for us to work hard: it will be a long season with plenty of matches and so this early phase is crucial, and important for building chemistry among us.”
