Nantes are in disarray, as they continue to plunge into the Ligue 1 relegation fight. Four days after their 5-1 humbling in the Coupe de France final against Toulouse, Les Canaris fell 2-0 at Brest in a six-pointer. Nantes are now 17th in the Ligue 1 standings with five games left to play, and have not won a league game since February 12.
According to L’Equipe and Ouest-France, the Nantes board have agreed on Thursday to give each of their players a €50k bonus should they avoid the drop in Ligue 2, as they did two years ago. In 2021, Nantes finished 18th and won their playoff against Toulouse on away goals.
This season, four Ligue 1 teams will be relegated to Ligue 2 with the French top-flight being reduced to 18 teams starting next season. Angers’ relegation has been confirmed. Ajaccio and Troyes, both on 22 points, are expected to join the Anjou side back in Ligue 2.
Nantes will host 16th-placed Strasbourg on Sunday for another six-pointer in the relegation fight. According to L’Équipe, Les Canaris are expected to play with 5 at the back. The outlet also reports that Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré is expected to remain in the dugout until the end of the season.
