The Athletic report that Mykhailo Mudryk wanted to join Arsenal over Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2023. When that didn’t happen, he was devastated.
Football insider Team News and Ticks reports that Mudryk called Arsenal in tears whilst on the way to the airport to join Chelsea, asking if the Gunners could do something to sign him and repeating that he wanted to play for them.
But it didn’t happen, with Arsenal refusing to meet Chelsea’s bid for the winger.
Mikel Arteta’s side added Leandro Trossard to the squad instead, with the former Brighton forward going on to contribute to 24 goals and assists in his first 13 months with the club.
Mudryk’s time at Chelsea hasn’t been so encouraging, with just 11 goals and assists over that same time period.
Former Chelsea star Kai Havertz has already passed that tally with Arsenal, and he’ll hope to be closer to Trossard’s 24 goal contributions than Mudryk’s 11 by the time he hits the 13-month mark at Arsenal.
Unfortunately for Mudryk, he’s signed one of those bizarrely long deals at Chelsea, and he’ll be stuck with the Blues until 2031 unless someone buys him out of his contract.
On that front, he can only really blame himself and his representatives for accepting such a lengthy deal.
