Jose Mourinho has left his position as head coach of Fenerbahce after the club failed to secure Champions League qualification.
The Turkish side lost 1-0 on aggregate in their playoff tie against Benfica to miss out on a place in the league phase.
A decision has now been made for Mourinho to leave the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium with immediate effect. Mourinho has been in charge of the Istanbul outfit since 2024 and led the side to a runners-up finish in the Süper Lig last season. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the news of Mourinho’s departure.
In October 2024, Mourinho joked that his next job would be a team in England that does not compete in European competition. The comments came after he was sent off during a Europa League draw with former club Manchester United. Unhappy with the decision, Mourinho said he’s like a job without European commitments – to avoid UEFA officials.
Speaking in a post-game press conference, Mourinho said: “I think the best thing I have to do is, when I leave Fenerbahce, I go to a club that does not play UEFA competitions.
“If any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go.”
