Jose Mourinho expects Dele Alli to remain with Tottenham beyond the transfer window, but warned the midfielder it is his ‘responsibility’ to rediscover his best form following a difficult period.

Alli’s future has been placed in doubt after he was left out of the Spurs squad for their clashes against Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Southampton last week, with reports suggesting the England international could be allowed to leave before the transfer deadline next month.

Paris Saint-Germain had been linked with the 24-year-old as he bids to bounce back from his struggles of recent seasons, but Alli has been included in the Spurs squad for their Europa League clash against Macedonian outfit Shkëndija tomorrow.

Mourinho has now discussed the future of the out-of-favour star and says he expects Alli to remain with the north London side, but says the player must shoulder responsibility of forcing his way back into contention.

“[Yes] I see him staying,” Mourinho said at his pre-match press briefing.

There is a tendency now that when a player performs or doesn’t perform to give responsibilities to coach because they gave him the right stick or didn’t. I always feel that 99% of the responsibility is the player. I, and the staff who work with the player, have 1%.”

Mourinho says tomorrow’s clash could provide Alli with another opportunity to prove himself, insisting he is happy to retain the player but warned ‘performances are important’ as the midfielder bids to improve.

“I always told that he will have his opportunities,” Mourinho continued. “I always told that it is no problem at all to have him and – like every other player – performances are important.

“He is coming, he has a chance to play and it will be important to play, it will be important for him to perform.”
