England were facing an unpredictable group stage opener against Croatia but it was the new boy – Kalvin Phillips – who stood out at Wembley.

Playing alongside Declan Rice, the 25-year-old was energetic, tenacious and showed quality with his assist for Raheem Sterling after breaking from deep.

He provided great balance in midfield, completing 94% of his passes and making seven ball recoveries (more than any other player) against top opposition.

Phillips also became the first Leeds player to assist a goal at Wembley since David Batty in 1999 against Luxembourg.
