There’s no getting away from it, this was a disappointing match.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between and neither side ever truly looked like breaking the deadlock. Of the three goalless draws we’ve seen so far, this was the least exciting.

Morocco were well organised and tough to break down, while Croatia seemed to lack a cutting edge up front despite all their probing and prying.

So our Man of the Match award goes to a player who is still a joy to watch even on the dullest days.

Luka Modrić made history before even stepping onto the pitch today when he became the first player to play in the European Championship and World Cup in three different decades.

It’s hard to believe that somebody who played in the 2006 World Cup could still be performing at such a high level, yet Modrić seems to defy the natural ageing process of the rest of us mere mortals.

Unfortunately he was unable to add another beautiful goal to his collection here, but he was still the smoothest operator on the pitch with a range of clever passes and some intelligent ball retrieval.

Croatia will need to be much better than this if they are to go as deep into the tournament as they did in 2018, but they can always rely on their 37-year-old captain to bring a touch of class to proceedings.
