During Barcelona’s recent friendly against FC Seoul, the commentator of the club’s official broadcast of the match has created quite the controversy by openly mocking Real Madrid legend Luka Modric.
Modric, who left Real Madrid this summer after 13 years of services and six UEFA Champions League – more than Barcelona’s overall club tally of five, is widely considered one of the best midfielders to grace La Liga in the 21st century.
However, during the broadcast, the commentator tried to mock the Croatian international with a rather mean and pointless statement.
During the match, the Barcelona commentator suddenly started talking about Modric, pointing out that his last contribution for Real Madrid was to pass Jules Kounde for Barça’s winning goal in the Copa del Rey final last season.
“From here, we haven’t given the tribute that Luka Modric deserves. His last great service was the pass to Koundé in the Copa del Rey final,” he said.
He was indeed referring to the Copa del Rey final where Modric’s attempted pass during extra time was intercepted by Kounde.
The Frenchman then produced a sensational finish to score the winning goal for Barcelona, helping the Catalans retain their dominance over Los Blancos last season.
The statement, coming from Barcelona’s official streaming platform, is uncalled for, especially when hurled against someone who is considered an icon in world football.
An ill-judged comment from someone does not take away what Modric achieved during his time at Real Madrid, departing as the most decorated player in the history of the club with 28 trophies.
