Uruguayâs World Cup ambitions came to a crashing halt as they were eliminated at the group stage despite a victory over Ghana.
And our Man of the Match is âŠ
Uruguay came to life in their final match against Ghana, scoring their first goal of the tournament but it was too little too late as they were eliminated on âgoals scoredâ.
In a rematch of one of the most memorable encounters of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Luis SuĂĄrez once again played centre stage against Ghana with a key role in both goals.
Despite a largely lethargic appearance in the first two games of the tournament, the performance that SuĂĄrez put in for the 60 minutes he was on the field had shades of 2015 as the 35-year-old created chances, nutmegged defenders and received his second card in the competition â both brandished against Ghana.
However, the performance of the match has to go to the only player to put the ball in the back of the net for Uruguay.
Giorgian de Arrascaetaâs reputation in Brazil where he plies his trade with Flamengo is well known, with the attacking midfielder playing an instrumental part in Dorivla Juniorâs side since 2019.
Scoring wins you games and secures three points, itâs a stolen clichĂ© but as Uruguay book their flights home having been eliminated because of their lack of goals scored itâs one that will leave a long-lasting sour taste in the mouth of La Celeste.
Given his first start of the tournament, the 28-year-old didnât waste his opportunity to shine on the worldâs biggest stage and as South Korea celebrate, Uruguay will have plenty of time to ponder what couldâve been as Diego Alonso took too long to get his formula right.
