The Netherlands booked their place in the last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Austria in Amsterdam.
And our Man of the Match was …
If you’ve watched anything of Liverpool over the past five years, you won’t need telling this – but bloody hell, Gini Wijnaldum is some player.
After half a decade at Anfield, the 30-year-old has left the Premier League for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, and supporters of the Parc des Princes side must have been licking their lips in anticipation after this performance.
There was nothing showy here from the Dutch maestro, just brilliant brushstrokes at every turn, small details creating a true 90 minute masterpiece.
With Frenkie de Jong alongside him, Wijnaldum controlled every aspect of this match, slowing down play when necessary and then breaking at speed when the Austrians were on their feet.
Every decision was the right one, every pass weighted perfectly, every tackle timed to perfection.
This was a supreme performance from a man at the peak of his powers.
That’s now two wins out of two for the Dutch and a place in the last 16 confirmed.
The future’s bright. The future’s orange.
