More than ten thousand Valencia supporters gathered outside their home stadium Mestalla to protest against Peter Lim, the largest shareholder of the club, and Anil Murthy, the club president, prior to the club’s final La Liga game of the season against Celta Vigo, report Marca.
The protest comes on the back of controversial audios of Valencia president Anil Murthy that were leaked by Valencian news outlet Superdeporte. Thousands assembled more than half an hour before the game to protest against the management of the club. Chants of “Peter, go now” and “Anil, out of Mestalla” were repeated and banners such as “Lim Out”, “Your Business, Our Feelings” were shown to express the fans’ criticism of the board. It led to an odd circumstance where more people were outside the ground than within the stadium.
Valencia have failed to qualify for Europe for the third successive season, a first such occurrence since the 1980s when the club were relegated.
When enquired about the situation, Valencia manager José Bordalás said: “I respect any decision and the fans. I’m not going to assess if it’s good or bad. The fans are sovereign and I only have words of praise. I respect whatever decision they make.”
When asked if he would be the one holding the press conference come Valencia’s first league game of the new season in August, Bordalás stated: “I don’t know. In principle, there is no reason to think otherwise.”
