Optimism in the Principality is high at the moment, and that positivity has trickled down to some of the AS Monaco alumni.

Adi Hütter’s men are first in Ligue 1 with 19 points after seven matchdays, seeking a first trophy since winning the French top-flight during the 2016-17 campaign.

Those 19 points signal the best start for this club to a top-flight campaign since the 1960-61 season when they won their first Ligue 1 title.

Delio Onnis is the highest goalscorer in Ligue 1 history (299 goals), and Jean-Luc Ettori is the second-most-capped player in the history of this competition (602).

Together, they helped Monaco win the 1977-78 Ligue 1 title, with the former French international goalkeeper winning the competition two more times as a member of Les Rouge et Blanc.

Speaking to Le Parisien, both players said there is much to like about this group in 2024-25. “The good thing is that, since the players are young, they can give the team even more,” according to Onnis.

“We cannot minimise the role of the coach; he has built a competitive young group,” notes Ettori.

Onnis says that he especially enjoys Aleksandr Golovin, calling the Russian “a beautiful number 10 with great touches.”

Ettori cautions that it is still early but says, “I would be surprised if they (Monaco) come away with nothing by the end of the season I feel the players would be disappointed not to win anything.

Les Monégasques are also unbeaten after two matches played in the UEFA Champions League, and Ettori says that after defeating one of the tournament favourites, Barcelona (2-1), he feels this team is “capable of everything.”

While eight Monaco players have found the back of the net for them in Ligue 1 this season, Hütter’s side have shown tremendous defensive discipline, conceding the joint-fewest goals in the league, alongside RC Lens (four).
