Karim Benzema’s impact at Real Madrid is sometimes questioned but Luka Modrić has backed his team-mate.

The France striker managed just five LaLiga goals last season, and though he has already matched that tally this campaign, he continues to split opinion.

However, Modrić insists observers “do not realise” the forward’s qualities in the Real set-up.

“He is a very nice person and a great scorer,” the Croatian told Telefoot.

“People do not realise how good he is, they do not realise enough of his qualities and his importance to our team.”

Modrić, Benzema and Real Madrid take on Huesca on Sunday afternoon and are currently fifth in the LaLiga table, eight points behind leaders Barcelona who have played a game more.
