MLS Matchweek 15 – A Hooligan Round-Up

Article image:MLS Matchweek 15 – A Hooligan Round-Up

We had three three-three draws and an average of three-point-six goals per game. I’m sensing a trend.

All the Threes

San Diego FC 2 – 1 LA Galaxy

Three may be the magic number for Schoolhouse Rock and De La Soul, but it’s unlucky for LA Galaxy. The misery continues to rain upon this free-falling franchise as they go fifteen games without a win. This week the pain was delivered viathe forehead of Hirving “Chucky” Lozano in the 5th minute of stoppage time.

Charlotte FC 3 – 2 Columbus Crew

Expectations around the host team were low coming into this one, Charlotte having dropped six in a row. Columbus, meanwhile, were suffering from a case of drawitis, their last three games ending square. Charlotte allowed the Crew to control the ball, trusting their counter to salvage them. It was a clever strategy.

Philadelphia Union 3 – 3 Inter Miami CF

Lionel Messi ruined Tai Baribo’s brace by sparking a late comeback. He struck a brilliant dead-ball into the upper left corner in the 87th minute to give the visitors a shred of hope. Then in the 95th he fed Telasco Segovia a pass, which the Venezuelan midfielder duly smashed into the net. Inter will need this type of grit in next month’s Club World Cup; Union were left dazed and shaken by what had happened.

Toronto FC 1 – 2 Nashville SC

Despite the scoreline and the even possession, this game was all Nashville. They had double the shots, on-target shots and corners. Sam Surridge even got double goals. Toronto’s score came in stoppage time from Jonathan Osorio.

Sporting Kansas City 3 – 3 New England Revolution

After jumping out to a two goal lead, the Revs had a mini-collapse in the second half. SKC went on an uncharacteristic goal-scoring rampage early in the second half with Dániel Sallói, Dejan Jovelic and Manu García hitting in an eight-minute span. It was up to Maximiliano Urruti to salvage the Revs with an 84th minute sliding effort to meet Luis Díaz’s cross and claw back a point.

San Jose Earthquakes 3 – 3 Houston Dynamo FC

It was looking dire for San Jose early into the second half. Felipe Vieira got Houston’s second goal in the 50th, and their backline was keeping the Quakes quiet. But in a ten-minute stretch starting in the 66th, the Quakes buried three goals from Preston Judd (brace) and Daniel Murie. The home crowd of PayPal Park was jubilant entering into the stoppage time but hushed by Griffin Dorsey’s 91st minute strike that leveled the score.

Real Salt Lake 2 – 3 Vancouver Whitecaps

New York City FC 3 – 1 Chicago Fire FC

Chicago lived up to its moniker when Philip Zinkernagel slotted home in the 19th minute, quieting the sparse Yankee stadium crowd. NYCFC was already on the front foot when Brian Gutíerrez was shown a straight red for elbowing Aiden O’Niell in the face. After that, Chicago cooled considerably but were able to enter halftime with a lead. The second half, however, saw NYCFC take full control. Chicago would end the game with nine players after Tah D’Avilla got two yellows.

Atlanta United FC 4 – 2 FC Cincinnati

Upset city! Against all the statistics, and bucking an eight-game winless streak, Atlanta pulled out an unexpected win. Cincy took a record thirty shots, placing ten on frame and forcing Brad Guzan to make eight saves. They also took eleven corners to Atlanta’s two. Just how Atlanta pulled this one off is a miracle. FWIW this was included in the threes cause 4+2=6… you get it.

All the Other Games

Colorado Rapids 1 – 0 St. Louis CITY SC

St. Louis CITY has a serious issue with scoring. Their eleven goal tally is the second worst in the league. With only one point taken from the last five league games, their current fourteenth place position had been earned.

Minnesota United FC 1 – 1 Austin FC

After two early goals in the first half, this match quickly became an all-out Minnesota assault. Austin’s goalkeeper Brad Stuver made five saves in the closing twenty minutes to hold onto their point.

Orlando City SC 1 – 0 Portland Timbers

It’s no good having the ball if you don’t do anything with it. Portland had 60% possession, but still managed half the number of shots (7 to 14) as Orlando. Orlando is riding a ten game unbeaten streak and has the fewest losses (2) of any team besides Vancouver.

D.C. United 0 – 2 New York Red Bulls

United don’t lose this for lack of trying. 85% of their shots were on target; sadly, NYRB keeper Carlos Coronel was on point and blocked them all. Red Bulls hit D.C. on the tail end of both halves (42nd and 95th minutes) to win.

CF Montréal 2 – 2 LAFC

The hosts burst out of the gate to earn an unusual (by this season’s standards) two goal lead by the 22nd minute. Giacomo Vrioni started Montréal off after a shot from Prince Owusu was blocked right into his feet. Spinning, his resulting shot found the far corner. Owusu would get on the scoreboard after converting a penalty a quarter-hour later. LAFC midfielder Mark Delgado would halve the lead in the 38th minute. It would fall on the shoulders of le vieil homme Oliver Giroud to rescue the point. Minutes after subbing on, he would punch home a deflected shot. An unlucky break for Montréal.

Seattle Sounders FC 1 – 0 FC Dallas

This game was as exciting as watching dough rise until Osaze Urhoghide handled the ball in the box. Albert Rusnák converting the spot kick and we had a winner.
