The LA Galaxy head into their first California Clasico fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes still winless as they near the halfway point of the season. Meanwhile, the Quakes are unbeaten in their last seven games.
Here's everything you need to know about Wednesday night's nationally televised clash.
As rough as the season has been for the Galaxy, from a personnel standpoint it's the Quakes who may see Wednesday's match as a more difficult moment.
Eight days ago, San Jose required extra time to see off the Portland Timbers 1-0 and reach the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
And they've been without leading scorer Cristian Arango for a few games now with what appeared to be a hamstring injury suffered back in a 3-3 draw against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami on May 14.
Joseph Paintsil, Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus are all available for LA after all three have experienced short-term layoffs this season. The 35-year-old Reus may be the most likely to be rotated, with Diego Fagundez possibly filling in the central attacking midfield role until Reus enters off the bench.
Novak Micovic (GK) - Miki Yamane, Carlos Garces, Maya Yoshida, John Nelson - Edwin Cerillo, Lucas Sanabria - Gabriel Pec, Diego Fagundez, Joseph Paintsil - Christian Ramirez
Earl Edwards Jr. (GK) - Max Floriani, Daniel Munie, Dave Romney - DeJuan Jones, Beau Leroux, Ian Harkes, Vitor Costa - Cristian Espinoza, Ousseni Bouda, Preston Judd
LA Galaxy: Riqui Puig - knee (out). San Jose Earthquakes: Chicho Arango - lower body (out), Noel Buck - lower body (out), Daniel - lower body (out), Francesco Montali - upper body (out). Niko Tsakiris - lower body (out).
The Galaxy are clearly an inferior squad to last year's group that won the 2024 MLS Cup, but they're also not as bad as this astounding winless run suggests. At some point, it will end. So why not Wednesday?
Between the busier itinerary and lack of a key scorer, this is a good time to play San Jose. And while rivalries can bring pressure, they can also be freeing for teams because, well, throwing the records out the window and all that.
