Tottenham Hotspur are likely to sign a centre-back in the next stage of their squad overhaul, Danny Mills has suggested.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds defender believes Spurs’ summer business so far has made the prospect of a top-four finish more of a reality.

The club confirmed the double capture of Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilón from Real Madrid on Saturday.

They join Wolves right-back Matt Doherty and Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as Tottenham’s major signings this window.

Spurs finished last season in sixth place, seven points behind Chelsea in fourth position.

It was the first time in four seasons that the Lilywhites failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Asked by Football Insider whether the signings of Bale could guarantee them a top-four finish, Mills said: “I still think that’s going to be difficult, it doesn’t guarantee them the top four but I think it makes them an awful lot closer.

“I thought they’d probably struggle if they just went into the season with what they had.

“They’ve obviously got the left-back Reguilon as well, who is a very good player that will give you the balance down the left-hand side.

“They’ve got a really good right back in and a really good left-back but centre-half may be a little bit of an issue. Do I see them signing a centre-back? Yes.

“Midfield is starting to look a little better and the forward line is fine. So suddenly Mourinho is starting to put his team together.”

Bale has rejoined Spurs on an initial season-long loan deal six years after he made the move to Madrid.

Tottenham spent £28million including add-ons on Reguilón with Real Madrid having an option to buy back the defender for £37million.
