Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has been at the center of intense speculation linking him with a move to Milan. According to Corriere della Sera’s Milan correspondent, Carlos Passerini (via Il Garante), a summer switch is ‘doable,’ though there’s a significant roadblock.
Milan had tried to hire Conte last summer but eventually went for a different profile in Paulo Fonseca. The Rossoneri would soon come to regret their choice. Indeed, the club fired the ex-Roma manager before the turn of the new calendar year.
Unfortunately, Fonseca’s successor, Sergio Conceicao, has failed to turn the team’s fortunes around despite leading Milan to Supercoppa Italiana glory at the start of his tenure. With the 19-time Serie A champions on the verge of missing out on European qualification, the Portuguese tactician will likely wave goodbye to the San Siro in the coming months.
Conte has again emerged as the club’s top target amid rumors he could leave Napoli after only one year in charge. The trophy-laden manager has recently fueled such talks by taking a dig at the Partenopei in his latest press conference. Therefore, Milan have grown confident of luring the 55-year-old away from Naples.
However, there’s an obstacle on the road. Juventus would be Conte’s first choice, with the Turin giants still undecided on Igor Tudor’s future at the Allianz Stadium. Should they decide to part with the Croat, Conte would be their top target, and given their history, Milan would stand no chance in this race.
