Milan aren’t wavering in their support of Paulo Fonseca publicly, but, the more they lose ground from the top four, the more the doubts about the future of the coach pile up. He has been under scrutiny before every international break, but then a victory dissipated the clouds, Calciomercato informed.
The boss is facing the same situation ahead of Friday’s game against Hellas Verona. The Rossoneri have won just once in the last five Serie A matches and sit in eighth position, seven points below Fiorentina and Lazio. They are out of the Scudetto fray already given the large disadvantage from Atalanta, Napoli, and Inter.
If Milan pulled the plug on Fonseca anytime soon, they’d prioritize an Italian manager. Maurizio Sarri was extensively linked to them. He’s open to taking over a team midseason, provided the technical project convinces him fully. Instead, a return of Massimiliano Allegri, who doesn’t seem too eager, is unlikely.
The new entry in the shortlist of replacements is Roberto Mancini. Both he and the former Juventus boss have been attached to Roma for next season. The ex-Italy and Saudi Arabia manager hasn’t ruled out such a possibility. The current Rossoneri skipper is under contract until 2027 with a €2.5M annual salary.
It won’t be long before they are in real trouble unless they rip off a few wins in a row. While it wouldn’t be hard to upgrade on the bench, they haven’t allocated many resources to the coach’s wages in recent years. A few options would be unrealistic if they didn’t change that. Plus, they aren’t the best-run team, and some managers don’t like that.
