Milan released a statement confirming that goalkeeper Marco Sportiello completely severed a tendon in his hand during a hotel room accident and underwent surgery in the United States.

The shot-stopper turned 32 in May and was all set to be their second-choice behind Mike Maignan this season.

However, during the pre-season tour of the USA, he sustained a freak injury in his hotel room and the damage done was far worse than expected.

The club released a statement confirming Sportiello suffered the complete lesion of the flexor tendon in the middle finger on his left hand.

Shock injury for Sportiello

It is a very unusual injury and one that had to be resolved with an operation performed by a specialist surgeon in the USA.

He will return to Italy over the next few days to begin the rehabilitation process, but it is not known how long he will be out of action for.

Milan have been linked with signing a new goalkeeper to cover him, including free agent Loris Karius.

Serie A would be ideal for the former Liverpool and Newcastle United man, who is married to Italian DAZN sports presenter Diletta Leotta.
