Como manager Cesc Fabregas has emerged as a potential candidate to replace under-fire Sergio Conceicao at Milan. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, last season’s Serie A runners-up are contemplating appointing the Spaniard as their new boss at the end of the campaign.
Despite enjoying a flying start to life at Milan, Conceicao is no longer popular among the club hierarchy. Less than two months since leading the Rossoneri to Supercoppa Italiana glory in Saudi Arabia, the 50-year-old’s career at the San Siro stands on the brink.
Back-to-back league losses, including a 2-1 defeat at Bologna on Thursday, intensified the pressure on Conceicao, with Milan falling eight points behind the top-four pace. As a result, the former Porto coach has reportedly offered his resignation.
However, Milan already sacked Paulo Fonseca toward the end of the last calendar year. Therefore, they’re reluctant to part ways with another manager in the same season – something that has not happened in a long time. Yet, a change could be inevitable in the summer.
Fabregas, who’s on course to salvage Como’s Serie A status in their first top-flight season in over two decades, could take Conceicao’s place in the dugout. Milan seemingly view the ex-Arsenal midfielder as a viable contender to lead an upcoming transition.
As things stand, Milan will undergo significant personnel changes in the next transfer window. And Fabregas could be at the steering wheel. He’s not the only name on the club’s shortlist, with Maurizio Sarri and Roberto De Zerbi being in contention for the job.
