Mikel Arteta has bullishly claimed it is a “big reality” that Aaron Ramsdale is an Arsenal player next season, amid interest from Newcastle.

Ramsdale has lost his place as the Gunners’ No1 goalkeeper this season following the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford last summer. Raya’s move is expected to be made permanent in the summer for £27million and it has led many to believe that Ramsdale will leave.

The England goalkeeper has most recently been linked with a move to Newcastle, while Wolves were tracking him around the January transfer window.

Asked about interest from Newcastle in Ramsdale, Arteta said: “I’m not going to comment on those things”.

The Arsenal manager was then pressed if there was any suggestion that Ramsdale could still be at the club next season, replying: “Suggestion? There is a big reality that Aaron is here because he is our player and has a contract.”

Ramsdale signed a new contract with Arsenal in May of last year that runs until the summer of 2026, while it also includes the option to extend by a further 12 months.

The 25-year-old joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 as part of a deal worth an initial £24m, although that figure could yet rise to £30m.

Ramsdale excelled during his first two seasons at Arsenal, helping the club to fight for the Premier League title last year, but he is now struggling for minutes.
