The Senegalese defender set to leave Rennes after a challenging season in Brittany
Mikayil Faye
Mikayil Faye is set to leave Stade Rennais to join Cremonese in Serie A. On Monday, September 1st, the Senegalese centre-back is undergoing his medical in Cremona before putting pen to paper on his new contract. The two clubs have agreed on a loan deal with a purchase option.
Faye arrived in Brittany last summer as one of Senegal's brightest football prospects. The central defender made the switch from Barcelona, bringing with him strong credentials and the ambition to make his mark in Ligue 1. However, his debut season in the red and black did not go as planned. Despite high expectations, the Bignona native struggled to win over his successive coaches. His adaptation to French football took longer than hoped, resulting in limited playing time and few opportunities to progress.
Things took a downturn in recent weeks under the guidance of Habib Beye. After a delayed start to pre-season, the Senegalese coach dropped his compatriot from the squad for the opening match of the league campaign. This decision marked a turning point in the defender's Rennes adventure. The Senegal international clearly no longer featured in his manager's plans for the new season. Being sidelined accelerated talks for a departure before the close of the summer transfer window.
