Club América have been no stranger to controversy during the 2020 Clausura campaign but the one that has caused the most outrage was the situation involving Ecuadorian midfielder Renato Ibarra.
This player was detained, having been accused of domestic violence, but has since been released. However, América released a statement that they were not going to involve themselves with the player anymore, ending his spell with the Mexican giants.
América similarly banished Roger Martínez (under different circumstances) but has since welcomed him back to the club.
Speaking on Tuesday, manager Miguel Herrera has seemingly opened the door to Ibarra’s return as well.
“The truth is that he is a great player. Nobody wants him to leave the club and we will wait for the decision made by the board.
“We were in talks about Renato, since right now, as we know, the board has him separated from the club.
“But we are going to wait for them to communicate the decision to us 100 per cent. His future with us is still unclear.”
Ibarra joined from Vitesse in summer 2016 and has been instrumental to América’s success, scoring 14 goals and assisting 33 others in 138 career games with the club.
