Manchester City striker Vivianne Miedema is celebrating her birthday today!
The all-time Barclays Women’s Super League scorer joined the Blues last summer having established herself as one of the finest forwards of her generation during spells at Heerenveen, Bayern Munich and Arsenal.
Since then, and during her maiden season at the Joie Stadium, she grabbed 11 goals and four assists in 19 matches across all competitions.
Across those outings have been a swathe of memorable performances as she continues to write the sky blue chapter of what’s been a remarkable career so far.
Here are five of those displays…
City travelled to the French capital aiming to gain an early advantage in our Champions League Round Two qualifier against Paris FC.
The Blues were also equipped in the first-leg meeting with four summer signings, including Miedema who made the perfect start to life at her new club when netting 36 minutes into her debut.
With the match finely poised with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, she broke the deadlock when she lost her marker and slammed home Jess Park’s cross in acrobatic fashion.
It was vintage Miedema, as she immediately showcased her talents to the sky blue faithful before further strikes from Park (two), Mary Fowler and Chloe Kelly secured a fine victory.
It was written in the stars that Miedema’s first WSL outing would be against her former club, Arsenal, where she spent seven illustrious years.
Her return to North London proved to be an interesting sub-plot to a generally enthralling encounter, and the WSL’s record scorer came close to grabbing the opener with an audacious lob from all of 35 yards.
However, the hosts then drew first blood when Frida Maanum fired into the top corner and could’ve doubled their advantage when Stina Blackstenius hit the side netting.
Then came the moment those of an Arsenal persuasion had been dreading, when Miedema came back to haunt her former employers.
Knocking the ball through Lotte Wubben-Moy’s legs, the Dutch international's curling effort from the edge of the box deflected into the net to draw City level.
The drama continued to unfold in north London when Park handed us the lead with a sensational half-volley before Miedema tested Manuela Zinsberger twice.
Then, in the closing stages, we were forced to share the spoils when Beth Mead tapped home from close range to equalise.
A famous night under the Joie Stadium lights, City deservedly overcame the reigning European champions in our UEFA Women’s Champions League opener.
As expected, the clash was played at a breathless place, but the Blues got to grips quicker than our opponents and took the lead on 36 minutes with Miedema at the centre of Naomi Layzell’s first for the Club.
The Netherlands international redirected a corner back into the six-yard box, with our defender in the right place to bundle the ball into the back of the net.
That was Miedema’s last goal involvement on the night but she, along with her team-mates, delivered a phenomenal display to seal the success with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw doubling our lead in the second half.
Miedema scored twice in a six-goal thriller at Villa Park with her second of the afternoon winning the WSL Goal of the Season award.
After Chasity Grant had netted inside six minutes for the hosts, the Netherlands forward equalised for City midway through the first half when she cut out Danielle Turner’s loose pass and fired home her third goal in as many matches.
She then took centre stage once again when handing the Blues the lead in phenomenal fashion, sending a vicious, curling effort into the top corner of the net.
Three further goals followed the interval with Villa levelling before strikes from Mary Fowler and Jess Park.
In what was the second of four consecutive matches against Chelsea in all competitions, Miedema once again showed she was a player for the big occasion in our Champions League quarter-final first leg.
All eyes were on City to see how we would respond to the narrow League Cup final defeat to the Londoners and, after a goalless hour, we deservedly went ahead.
A series of crosses and corners were swung into the Chelsea area and never truly cleared by the visitors, and after Hannah Hampton tipped Laia Aleixandri’s header onto the crossbar, Miedema was on hand to volley into the roof of the net.
She had the bit between her teeth and continued to be a thorn in Chelsea’s side and she grabbed her second of the evening when collecting Kerolin’s cut-back and coolly sent the ball into the bottom corner with her left foot.
