Middlesbrough goalkeeper Joe Lumley is giving little away with regards to his future, as he enters the final few months of his contract at The Riverside Stadium.

Lumley joined ‘Boro from QPR back in the summer of 2021, and went on to make 39 appearances in all competitions for the club last season.

But after falling down the pecking order, the goalkeeper joined another Championship side, Reading, on loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

The 27-year-old has since gone on to make 25 appearances for the Royals so far, becoming a popular and important figure at the club in the process.

As things stand, Lumley’s contract at parent club Middlesbrough is set to expire this summer, although it seems he is not thinking to far ahead with regards to his future just yet, even if he is enjoying his time with Reading.

Asked about what might be next for him after the current season ends, Lumley told Berkshire Live: “I’m really, really enjoying it, we just have to see what happens at the end of the year and with Middlesbrough. I’m obviously a Middlesbrough player and don’t want to disrespect them in any way.

“I had a great time when I was there last year, really enjoyed it but I am at Reading now and at Reading to perform the best I can, to keep the team in the league and we’ll see what happens at the end of the year.”

The Verdict

While he isn’t going to say it, you do feel as though a permanent move to Reading could make sense for Lumley.

The goalkeeper knows he is going to get regular football at Reading, in contrast to Middlesbrough, where he now appears to be surplus to requirements.

An extended stay with the Royals could therefore be best for his career, and it does seem as though it is a move that could down well with those associated with the club as well.

The fact his contract situation means he ought to be available on a free transfer should work well for Reading from a financial perspective as well, meaning they ought to be aiming to get this wrapped up quickly in the summer.
