There is “hope” at Middlesbrough that a permanent deal could be struck to take Wolverhampton Wanderers player Ryan Giles to the Riverside on a long-term basis this summer, according to Teesside Live.
The 23-year-old joined Boro on a season-long loan deal back in June – and looked set to be one of the first names on the teamsheet at left wing-back under former boss Chris Wilder – but the latter departed the club in October.
Successor Michael Carrick came in and switched their system to a back four which could have limited the Wolves man’s game time – but the former Manchester United midfielder has retained faith in him with the left-sided player operating as a full-back.

As one of the first names on the teamsheet on Teesside, he looks set to continue being a regular starter between now and the end of this term, although it’s currently unclear whether he has a future at the Riverside beyond then.
Marc Bola’s deal doesn’t run out until 2024 and with Hayden Coulson putting pen to paper on an extension yesterday, that could make Giles surplus to requirements under Carrick next term.
However, there is reportedly hope that a permanent deal for the 23-year-old can be struck, though Boro may need to fork out a sizeable fee for him considering his contract at Molineux doesn’t expire until the summer of 2025.
The Verdict:
At 23 and with plenty of room for improvement, he’s definitely a player that Boro should be thinking about signing permanently, with the left-sided player potentially able to be sold on for a decent amount in the future.
Not only does he have room to improve – but he can also operate in several positions and that can only be useful for the Teesside club when faced with an injury crisis.
As Nottingham Forest’s deal for Morgan Gibbs-White in the summer showed though, Giles’ parent club won’t be willing to let some of their talented young players go for free and that’s why Boro could be priced out of a move.
With this, the Championship side’s recruitment team will need to line up a couple of other targets if they did want to bring in a new left-back in the summer.
You feel they should be looking to offload Bola if they want to recruit Giles or another left-back though – because it would be quite a strain on their wage bill if they had three left-backs in their squad.
This won’t matter as much if they are promoted – but they will still need to abide by financial fair play rules in the Premier League.
