Experienced Hull City defender Alfie Jones could be leaving the MKM Stadium for Teesside, with reports of interest from Middlesbrough.
Hull City's Alfie Jones could be on his way Middlesbrough, with reports that the Teesside club have registered an interest in the £2 million-rated defender.
Hull City's increasingly difficult-looking summer could be set to become even tougher, with reports that defender Alfie Jones could be leaving the club for Middlesbrough.
Hull only avoided relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2024-25 season on its final weekend, and the club has been very active in the transfer market this summer, following the appointment of Sergej Jakirovic at the end of June.
But the club has been placed under a transfer embargo, and there have been reports that the club's financial position could be worse than had originally been believed.
HullLive report that defender Alfie Jones could be on his way out of the club this summer.
They report that the new Middlesbrough head coach Rob Edwards is an admirer of Jones, and that the Tigers have been informed by Boro of their interest in their vice captain.
It's stated that discussions over a £2m move to Teesside have taken place, and that whilst the 27-year-old central defender has not shown any indication that he's pushing for an exit, Hull are understood to be unlikely to stand in his way if an offer in that ballpark lands on their desk.
Jones is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the MKM Stadium.
Alfie Jones started his career with Southampton, but he was unable to break through there and had loan spells with St Mirren and Gillingham before leaving for Hull in the summer of 2020.
Over the five years since then, he's run up 180 League appearances for Hull City. He made 31 appearances in their 2021 League One title-winning team, and was their Player of the Year in 2023.
The loss of Jones from the centre of Hull's defence would be a big loss to the club, and with HullLive having reported that he doesn't necessarily want to leave the club, Tigers fans could be forgiven asking why offers for him are being entertained.
He signed a three-year contract extension with the Tigers in 2023, so he only has a year to run on his contract, so in a sense, it would make a solid amount of sense to cash in on him now and get a couple of million pounds for him.
However, he has proven himself to be a reliable, dependable and strong leader for Hull over the last five seasons, and with the club desperately trying to avoid being pulled into perennial relegation battles moving forward, keeping hold of as many proven Championship performers as they can may well be worth more to them than a £2m transfer fee.
