Mick McCarthy previously applied for the Rotherham United, Sunderland and Wigan Athletic job vacancies, according to yesterday’s report from iNews.

Although it’s currently unclear when the ex-Ipswich Town boss applied for the Black Cats’ vacancy considering they made two managerial switches in 2022, his applications for the Rotherham and Wigan jobs came this season with Paul Warne and Leam Richardson spending a decent amount of time at the New York Stadium and the DW Stadium.

Warne departed the Millers for Derby County during the early stages of September, making an excellent start to the 2022/23 campaign but opting to take the step back down to League One after being offered the top job at Pride Park.

Sunderland changed managers this season

Real Fake

Richardson, on the other hand, was sacked by the Latics just a matter of weeks after signing a contract extension with the 43-year-old leaving the Greater Manchester outfit back in November.

The Black Cats have made two changes since McCarthy’s sacking at Cardiff City in October 2021, with Lee Johnson being dismissed in January last year and Alex Neil leaving for Stoke City during the latter stages of August.

McCarthy was unable to secure a return to his old club and the other two clubs mentioned – but Blackpool have decided to take a chance on him with the 63-year-old signing a short-term deal at Bloomfield Road earlier this week.

The Verdict:

With the CV he has, McCarthy deserves one more opportunity to make his mark and his current job could potentially be the best way for him to bow out of management on a high.

Considering the Lancashire side have been relegation favourites for much of the season, there may not be too much pressure on him and considering he will be able to leave at the end of the season regardless of what happens, that should minimise the pressure on his shoulders.

That will only help him to be a better manager, potentially boosting the Seasiders’ chances of remaining afloat in their current division beyond the end of this season.

He also has the players at his disposal to drag the club to safety, with Josh Bowler likely to be a game-changer following his return and Morgan Rogers likely to be a real asset in the final third as well.

Wigan would have been a good opportunity too – but you just feel he may have a better chance of dragging the Seasiders to safety. Following a poor end to his time at Cardiff, he will be hungry to redeem himself.
