Nicolás Castillo’s 89th-minute winner separated the two sides in Mexico as Chile defeated Mexico 1-0 late Tuesday night.

Mexico played far from their best line-up against a side that featured both Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal, as interim-boss ‘Tuca’ Ferretti named an entirely different XI from the team that defeated Costa Rica 3-2 last week.

Necaxa’s Hugo González, on loan from Monterrey, was the hero for Mexico early on as he made a miraculous save which left Junior Fernandes stunned.

González continued to impress in his second career international appearance, somehow keeping Ángelo Sagal’s close-range header out of the net midway through the second half.

After having a second-half goal disallowed in the 75th minute, Chile finally came up with the winner late. Alexis Sånchez found Nicolås Castillo at the top of the box, who unleashed a blast which was initially saved.

Castillo would bundle home his own rebound, unfortunately injuring González in the process – who had to be substituted late.

Next month, Mexico will travel to Argentina to play a pair of friendlies against the Albiceleste, while Chile will host CONCACAF sides Costa Rica and Honduras.
