Chelsea welcomed Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge earlier tonight as they looked to pick up a win and book a place in the final of the UEFA Champions League. The Blues made a bright start to the game and made the breakthrough in the 28th minute courtesy of Timo Werner’s goal. Thomas Tuchel’s men maintained a solid shape and went into the half-time interval one goal to the good.
The West London outfit created a lot of clear-cut opportunities to add to their goal tally in the second half and finally managed to kill the game off in the 85th minute when Mason Mount scored with a tidy finish. The contest ended with Thomas Tuchel’s men securing an impressive 2-0 win (3-1 on aggregate) over the Madrid giants.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player fared during the match against Los Blancos.
The Senegalese keeper made quite a few important saves to keep his team ahead in the game. Overall, he did enough to secure a well-deserved clean sheet tonight.
He won the ball back a few times and cleared the danger when needed. Christensen was once again solid throughout the 90 minutes.
The Brazilian centre-half was strong in the air and used his experience to keep the Real Madrid attackers frustrated during the game.
Rudiger didn’t take any chances at the back and produced a commanding display inside his half. However, he could have passed the ball a bit better.
The Spaniard did his fair share of defending and made one good chance in the Madrid half.
The Italian midfield ace timed his tackles well and won possession back numerous times for his side. He also orchestrated a couple of meaningful chances in the final third.
The French midfielder disrupted the opposition’s flow in the game and made some crucial interceptions for his team. He also cut open the Madrid backline quite a few times during the game.
Mount was always looking to cause problems for the opposition and got his just reward in the 85th minute when he scored with a good strike from close range.
Chilwell tracked back to defend his penalty area when required but struggled to influence the game in the final third.
The German youngster was unfortunate to hit the crossbar twice during his time on the field. Still, it was an encouraging display from him tonight.
Werner took his chance well in the first half to give Chelsea the all-important lead. He also created a couple of decent chances for his teammates.
He came off the bench to set up Mount’s goal late in the game.
James did not get enough time to make an impact.
He came on to run the clock down.
Giroud was introduced in injury-time.
