Premier League giants Chelsea got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a frustrating start after playing out a drab goalless draw against Sevilla at Stamford Bridge tonight. The London club spent a majority of the time chasing the ball, and were never really able to put the La Liga side’s defence under too much pressure. Timo Werner fluffed his lines with a couple of half-chances, and Edouard Mendy made a few smart saves as well. At the end of the day, both teams seemed to completely cancel each other out, but Frank Lampard can draw positives out of the fact that Mendy kept his second clean sheet in as many matches as a Chelsea player.

Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Sevilla

Edouard Mendy – 7.5

The Senegalese keeper returned from injury to start the match, much to the relief of the Chelsea faithful. Made some smart saves and offered a calming presence whenever Sevilla attacked his goal.

Reece James – 6.5

The Englishman was unable to impact the tie in an attacking sense, as his crosses lacked the required precision. Was given a torrid time defensively by the pace and strength of the Sevilla attackers.

Kurt Zouma – 6.5

The Frenchman had a couple of questionable moments where he gave the ball away unnecessarily, but was solid for the most part. Stood his ground when required to and dealt with a lot of attacks.

Thiago Silva – 7

The Brazilian veteran made multiple vital clearances against set-piece situations, and put his body on the line when required to as well. Calm and collected on the ball and never looked overly fazed.

Ben Chilwell – 6.5

The speedster was caught out of position defensively on a couple of occasions, but made up for it with his work-rate and determination at the back. Wasn’t able to produce any quality in attack though.

Jorginho – 6.5

The Italian passed the ball around with confidence for the duration he was on the pitch, but was taken off in the second half. Pressured off the ball a couple of times and picked up an early booking as well.

N’Golo Kante – 6

The Frenchman made a few interceptions in the defensive third but was caught lacking whenever he received the ball during Chelsea attacks. Handed the captain’s armband after Jorginho went off.

Mason Mount – 5

The Englishman was the first player to be substituted in the match as he struggled to adapt to the pace of the game. Played on the flank but never really managed to threaten in an attacking sense.

Kai Havertz – 7

The German made a number of smart turns in the middle of the park and tried to charge his way through the Sevilla defence. Couldn’t affect the tie in the final third of the pitch though.

Christian Pulisic – 6.5

The speedster had a rather frustrating evening down either flank for Chelsea as the Sevilla defenders didn’t allow him space to run into. Didn’t have the impact that he might’ve been hoping for.

Timo Werner – 6.5

The German fluffed a couple of good chances to find the net, with the best one coming on the brink of half-time. Made multiple sharp forward runs as usual but couldn’t produce anything meaningful.

The Moroccan trickster had a couple of solid crossing opportunities but failed to produce the required quality in the final third. Needs to apply himself more to get into the starting eleven.

Tammy Abraham – NA

Didn’t have time to make an impact.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – NA

Didn’t have time to make an impact.
