Memphis Depay completed his ninety minutes vs Villarreal with a goal to his name after an underwheling performance. The Dutchman was eventually awarded the man of the match, but it does flatter his performance.

All said though, it did help Barça take the lead, and register a 1-3 win on the road. Talking to the media about his goal in the second half, Depay said:

“I saw that the goalkeeper came out of the net, and at that moment for the split second I trusted my intuition. I didn’t hesitate.”

His early miss in the game was a major talking point after the game. The forward missed a 1v1 situation that should have been buried nine times out of ten. Depay concurred but said he always worked hard to give his best.

“I know that situations like that normally should be a goal for me, and I keep working hard to provide for the team. That’s what we need.”

Speaking about his difficulties in front of goal, the Dutchman was optimistic that he looks to score goals for the side.

“We sometimes suffer for not being able to score goals. Especially for me, I expect myself to score and I put a high expectation on myself to score goals. I need to score more goals, and the team needs it.”

The team have struggled in the closing minutes of the game in all of the past three encounters. Xavi already acknowledged that Villarreal did not deserve to lose the game, and Memphis replied on the same beat of the drum.

“As you can see, we are not safe with a 1-0 lead. Last game against Espanyol we kept the lead. Today was a little bit tough because we conceded in the last stage of the game, but I’m very happy with this victory.”

Memphis has now missed nine big chances in the league this season, the joint-highest. If Barcelona want to compete for the podium spots, he needs to bury the chances he gets. Real Betis at home next in line for the Blaugranas.
