Football is arguably the most lucrative sport in the world.

Gone are the days where top players could be signed for a mere £25 million fee, instead if owners want to sign the best of the best they’d better be prepared to fork out nine figures.

Neymar’s €222 million switch from Barcelona to Paris-Saint Germain still represents the existing transfer record, although one would imagine that statistic has a short-life span with fees seemingly ballooning with every passing summer break.

We’re now actually at the point where clubs feel the need to place £1 billion release clauses in their player’s contracts in order to frighten off potential suitors.

We saw that recently with Barcelona and Pedri – the ironic part being that even if said clause was to be activated it still wouldn’t be enough to clear the Catalan giant’s eye-watering level of debt…

Anyway, you get the jist, football has gone money-mad.

Therefore in order to keep in with that theme, why not take a look at which players transfermarkt believe to be the most valuable in world football.

Instead of ranking the top 10, we’re going to show you the most lucrative XI so you can see who leads the way in each position.

Check it out below.

It’s worth remembering that this is what transfermarkt value the players at, that doesn’t necessarily mean a player’s club would accept such a figure – could you imagine the uproar if Liverpool let Alexander-Arnold go for €80 million? Yikes…

In terms of the squad itself, Courtois’ magnificent season between the sticks for Madrid has seen him usurp Donnarumma as the most expensive goalkeeper.

Alexander-Arnold, Dias and Davies have retained their place in the squad from the 2021 edition. It might be a surprise to see Virgil van Dijk miss out but the youthfulness of De Ligt is enough to keep his compatriot out.

West Ham fans will be pleased to see Rice representing amongst the sport’s elite.

Whereas the midfield comprises of Salah, Foden and Vinicius. The Brazilian in-particular has seen his stock rise plentifully across Europe after scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final.

And the forwards, well, it’s no surprise to see those two culprits leading the line.
