Kylian Mbappe could be tempted by Liverpool if they were to rival Real Madrid for his signature next summer, according to reports in France.
The France international was the subject of intense speculation for most of the summer after being barred from Paris Saint-Germain training in a contract stand-off.
Mbappe’s deal at PSG runs out next summer and he has been heavily linked with a move away from the club with Real Madrid understood to be the favourites to land him.
PSG were unhappy that Mbappe had refused to renew his deal over the summer with the French club convinced that he had already verbally agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.
The French side even accepted a world-record bid of £259m from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in July as they looked to avoid losing Mbappe on a free – but the 24-year-old had no intention of moving to the Middle East.
He is still refusing to sign a new deal, although there are rumours that he will commit his future to PSG until 2025, allowing the club to get a fee from Real Madrid next summer.
Liverpool were also linked with a possible loan move for Mbappe as his future remained in limbo but following “very constructive and positive discussions” he returned to PSG duties.
When asked at the end of July of the chances of Liverpool signing Mbappe in 2023, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: “We laugh about it. I can say that I think he’s a really good player, but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now, but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.
“But it’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me, but that hasn’t happened in the eight years that I’ve been here. That would be the first time.”
And now French newspaper L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) insist that Liverpool ‘remains an option’ for Mbappe next summer and that a move to Anfield shouldn’t be ‘ruled out’.
There is a suggestion that ‘he could be tempted if a bid were to be made’ by Liverpool with Mbappe understood to be an ‘admirer’ of Klopp.
Other reports over the last month have claimed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is ready to give up on Mbappe if he signs a new contract at PSG, as the Spanish club want to sign him on a free transfer.
It seems extremely unlikely that Liverpool – but if they were to take cash for him next summer it could boost their chances of landing Mbappe.
