Mauritania took major step towards the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship CHAN 2024 with hard fought 1 - 0 win over Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam.

Turning Point Before Half Time

The game’s key moment came in the 41 minute when Burkina Faso’s Abdoulaye Toure was shown straight red card for off the ball foul on Moulaye Al Khalil upgraded from initial yellow after VAR review. The numerical advantage swung the momentum firmly in Mauritania’s favour.

In 1st half stoppage time , foul by Kalifa Nikiema on El Mami Tetah inside the area handed Alassane Diop the chance from the spot. The forward made no mistake slotting the ball into the bottom left corner for the only goal of the match.

Burkina Faso Push Back, Sarr Stands Tall

Despite the setback Burkina Faso pressed for equaliser in 2nd half. Patrick Malo forced fine stop from Abderrahmane Sarr who also denied Papus Ouattara from point blank range and tipped late Abdoul Abass Guiro header to safety.

At the other end, Tetah twice went close but was denied by goalkeeper Ladji Brahima who also kept out Moctar El Hacen with diving save in the dying minutes.

Group B Standings

The win takes Mauritania to 7 point, second behind hosts Tanzania. Madagascar 4 point remain the only team able to catch them going into the final round. Burkina Faso with just 3 point are mathematically out of contention.
