Matthew Hall leaves: 2 players Bristol Rovers should loan out this summer

With the transfer window set to open on June 14th, the Bristol Rovers leadership may wish to see who they are able to bring in before they confirm any more exits but manager Matt Taylor will already have an eye on which individuals may benefit greater from a temporary move away from the Memorial Stadium.

Sending younger squad members, fresh academy graduates, for example, out on loan can offer the aspiring talents a chance to gain invaluable insight and experience in senior football – usually at a league or two below – if they may not yet quite be ready for the intensity of League One, as well as offer the Rovers leadership some insight into their future development.

Often more established footballers will also be loaned out because they don’t quite fit into the plans of the manager. We saw this last season when James Connolly was sent on loan to Morecambe by former Rovers boss Joey Barton, to then return to feature for Taylor in the second half of the season.

Sending players out on loan can also benefit the bottom line for the accountants if the Gas can negotiate loan fees and satisfactory wage contributions.

Here Football League World will look at two Rovers players who may find themselves on the loan market this summer.

Kofi Shaw

Academy Graduate Kofi Shaw will be one of those high on the list of potential loan-outs next season.

The teenager made his first senior appearance for Rovers in their final game of last season during a 2-0 away defeat to Wigan Athletic. Shaw came on as a late substitute with his manager commenting on his debut in his post-match remarks.

Taylor said: “We felt this was a good opportunity to get him on the pitch and get him some minutes. Young players are incredible, but they need the strength and the glue of the senior ones. It will have been easier and more enjoyable in that situation, but at least he’s got out there and sampled it in this atmosphere. It’s a really good starting point for him and we want more young ones to come through.”

Once tipped for the Premier League, Shaw will have aspirations for next season to make his breakthrough into the senior ranks and establish himself as a reliable option for Taylor.

A loan move to the higher echelons of the National League, however, may be the best route for Shaw to get his taste of senior football, where he is perhaps more likely to get a run of games to flourish.

Matthew Hall

The Gas currently only have two goalkeepers on the books, but Matthew Hall may have an anxious wait along with other Rovers players this summer to see who is brought in at his position. Hall was recruited by former Rovers boss Joey Barton amidst a fallout with James Belshaw, who would depart the club soon after.

21-year-old Hall found himself as backup to Jed Ward and inward loanee Matthew Cox last season as Ward would grasp an opportunity afforded to him with both hands, making that position his own and thus staking his claim to be Bristol Rovers' number one next season.

Ward himself only turned 21 in May, so it poses an intriguing question for the Rovers' recruitment team, who may want to explore goalkeepers more established in League One. Hall is yet to make an impact in senior football so he will be hoping to gain crucial experience as he attempts to find his way at this level.
